OUR MARKET

As a global IPP we prioritize markets with strong fundamentals, such as promising economic growth rates, favourable energy supply/demand balance, and supporting policies for independent power generation. In all markets, we apply the risk-mitigating strategies that have yielded successful execution to date.

Building Energy has proved its international calling by moving into rapid-growth markets that have launched structured multi-year development programs in the renewable energy sector.

The regional headquarters has been based in Cape Town since 2012. In the six years since it entered South Africa, Building Energy has been awarded more than 300 MW of capacity in public tenders.

The company has made a number of strategic announcements. With the award of a 140MW wind project and a 4MW hydro project at the 4th South African Round of  the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme (REIPPP), Building Energy became the sole renewable energy IPP to have been awarded projects across four different generation technologies for four consecutive rounds (solar PV, wind, biomass and small-hydro).

Building Energy has developed several projects in Italy. The total pipeline in Italy counts roughly 8MW and the energy produced by the plants contributes to the generation of roughly 9GWh of power each year.  In October 2016, Building Energy completed the acquisition of the Authorization for Construction of two Hydro Power Plants located in North-West of Italy, in the Piemonte Region. The energy generated will satisfy the energy needs of 1,000 families and will also contribute to the reduction of 10,000 tons of CO2 emissions.

Building Energy expanded into the North American renewable energy market with the formation of Building Energy Holding US LLC (BEHUS) in 2013. Since then, the BEHUS team has grown five-fold and developed 33 MW of solar power plants as well as a 30 MW of wind farm.

The electricity generated by our projects in the US is sold to a variety of customers, ranging from public utilities to institutions and municipalities. Our development team evaluates federal and state policy, energy prices, and market conditions to determine the best customer and sale structure for each project. As the renewable energy industry is constantly evolving, our team is actively engaged in exploring new opportunities and mechanisms to sell clean energy to a growing range of consumers. The BEHUS team has extensive experience with activities spanning the entire green energy value chain, from project scouting and development, to construction management, financing, and maintenance of projects in operation. In addition to those projects already in operation, we are also currently developing an additional 100 MW of solar and 50 MW+ of wind farms across the country.
